Obesity: Guide Your Patients to Better Health

The obesity issue that faces our society is both gravely disconcerting and massively pervasive. Over 5 million Americans are morbidly obese; exceeding their ideal weight by 100 pounds or more.

Additionally, an unsettling percentage, in excess of 60% of the entire country’s population, is overweight[1]. The multitudes of fad diets, hypnotherapies, hormonal supplements and surgeries advocated are a convincing testament to this unfortunate and rampant phenomenon.

The austere health risks that are associated with obesity are not only numerous, but also decidedly precarious. Diabetes, heart & pulmonary diseases, as well as certain types of cancers and mental conditions, name only a few of the probable health issues that overweight individuals are likely to exhibit. In fact, patients that are more than twice their ideal body weight are seven times more susceptible to experience a heart attack or develop diabetes [2].

Child Obesity

A particularly disquieting number of obese Americans are under the age of 18; over 25 million nationally[3]. Not only is child obesity distressing, but also are the copious treatments that are often used to combat the issue. The incorporation of rigorous exercise routines and fly-by-night diet plans can not only harm a child’s physical health; but also can have serious effects on their mental well-being.

While certain diets, exercise routines and surgical treatments have reduced some of the symptoms associated with obesity in previous patients; the underlying issues are seldom addressed.

Seventy-two percent of patients that underwent surgery for weight-loss at the prestigious Mayo Clinic were noted for maintaining long-term weight reduction after surgery. Though this percentage is substantial, so is the percentage that experienced post-operative complications: a staggering 10%. Over 500 weight-loss surgeries are performed at the Mayo Clinic’s three locations annually. This implies a large amount of surgery-related health risks that should not be ignored [4].

The mainstream ideas vis-à-vis proper and effective treatment options for obesity are potentially dangerous and, in some cases, life-threatening. The typically offered solutions include: low sugar and/or high fruit & vegetable diet, intense exercise regimes and the aforementioned surgical therapies. But are these treatments beneficial to patients? Extensive clinical research implies that they are nothing of the sort.

Statistics of Obesity-Related Medical Problems

Individuals were surveyed by telephone during the Gallup-Healthway’s Well-Being Index between the months of January of 2008 and December of 2009. The people that were polled were asked questions pertinent to their BMI and lifestyles. Several hundred thousand Americans participated in the survey, during which they were inquired of their health status. The health problems covered included: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, depression and previous heart attacks. The findings were as follows:

  • Individuals with high blood pressure: 46.2% obese, 31.1% overweight
  • Individuals with high cholesterol: 36.8% obese, 30.1% overweight
  • Individuals with diabetes, 21.1% obese, 9.8% overweight
  • Individuals indicating previous heart attacks: 6.3% obese, 4.8% overweight
  • Individuals suffering with depression: 23.3% obese, 15.3% overweight

Underweight participants reported significant levels of the listed health conditions, as well[5]. The propensity that obese individuals displayed to the conditions mentioned is highly notable. Presumably, the actual numbers are likely far greater today.

A Better Treatment Option

Comprehensive research and laboratory testing has been rigorously conducted in more recent years. The studies have revealed information that can actually help patients recover from health maladies; instead of only treating the issues. The foundation of this recovery option is the increase in undetected toxic food reactions that individuals unknowingly possess. These reactive foods can cause increases in toxicity and inflammation within the bloodstream and have been attributed to a great many health problems; including obesity.
